I never expected to spend a summer in London, yet there I was. This study abroad experience has provided me with more educational and learning opportunities than being in a classroom ever has. Coming into this trip, I had so much to learn regarding football (soccer). I was super unfamiliar with the teams, athletes, and sport culture. Leaving this trip, I can definitely say i’ve been well exposed to the world of football and loved every second of it. And not just soccer but Cricket and real tennis too! Everyday we were traveling and exploring a new area and being a visual learner, I benefitted immensely.

London definitely had a bit of a learning curve. Although there was no language barrier, it took awhile to get used to their way of living, especially the left side driving. The portion sizes were definitely shocking as an American being used to our large sizes. After this program, my global perspective has definitely changed. It’s exciting to see how the world shows passion in different ways and through different sports. (See my photo story below for Arsenal and Chelsea fan statements!)

Overall, looking back I would’ve prepared for the trip differently with different attire, equipment, and mindset. However, the program was amazing and I’d choose to do it a thousand times over. Professor Eric Esterline was extremely supportive and engaging which helped majorly in transitioning students to a foreign learning environment as well as Mark, with Learn International, who was the best personal tour guide we could ask for. I truly believe it was the people that made this trip such an amazing experience that I will forever treasure.
